Happy winter solstice.

Ahhhh! A student brought me a winter solstice gift. Yuzu and yuzu pound cake. I love Japan.

Before I go! Today, a student brought me yuzu, which are (I guess) in between a mandarin and a grapefruit, as well as yuzu poundcake. I was touched.

On the winter solstice, people give yuzu as gifts. I guess you are supposed to take a yuzu bath on the winter solstice. Uh, how magical does that sound? Since I have had a crazy day, week, month, YEAR, and have to catch a train to Tokyo in the next hour, I am sticking them in the refrigerator until after vacation. But I will ring in the new year, yuzu bath style.

Yuzu is so good! :D It’s known as a citron in English, I think. If you like Japanese-style pickles, Makiko Itoh has a good recipe for those that I want to try: http://justbento.com/handbook/johbisai/yuzu-scented-winter-vegetable-tsukemono-pickles

I just saw that recipe! And I’ve been meaning to tell you thanks for sending me that just bento link. IT IS AMAZING.

      Happy holidays!

  4. I don’t even have a bath tub at home which is highly unJapanese so I wo’tb be taking any yuzu bath but it smells so good, that I know. I find it great in tea/water, shampoo/conditioner, and in food in general.

    Sarah,
I have a yuzu lotion I got at City Market and always wondered what it was! Then today I found a recipe for Yuzu Maple cocktail at 101 Cookbooks: http://www.101cookbooks.com/archives/yuzu-maple-leaf-cocktail-recipe.html and checked out your blog to find a post about yuzu. If you have any maple syrup left, you should try this drink – a blend of Japan and Vermont! Miss you and hope you are enjoying life on the other side of the world!

Rachel! I think of you often. I have been doing more yoga (online…FREE!), and it always makes me think of you. I miss you! Also, I want to make that yuzu maple cocktail. Sounds smashingly delicious!
