TRAINING: I finished 20 miles…

Annie and I ran our 20 miler on a beautiful Saturday morning. We ran from Burlington to Charlotte (a town nearby) on country roads. They were lovely, scenic, and hilly. I finished feeling good, but thirsty. I ran out of fluids with about 45 minutes left of the run.

Combined with all of the extra hills…..well…..

Lesson learned: This is not enough for a hilly three-hour plus run.

20 miler fuel

Oh, I was so glad to get home and drink Gatorade. Down water. Make my smoothie!

Smoothie ingredients

Strawberry-Banana-Chocolate-Almond Smoothie

  • 1 cup skim milk
  • 1 cup frozen strawberries
  • 1/2 banana
  • 1 tablespoon hot chocolate (Aztec Spicy hot chocolate is incredible.)
  • 1 tablespoon almond butter (I like the one with honey in it!)

Add everything to the blender. Blend on high. Pour. Enjoy.

Post-run smoothie  Smoothie & The Dude

Pre-run: Five whole-wheat sourdough pancakes (merely replace half of the all-purpose flour with whole-wheat flour) with bananas and maple syrup. A friend asked if I cramped up eating all of this before running. Uh, no. I’ve never eaten so many pancakes since I started maintaining a sourdough starter. I’m used to them. And I needed some serious fuel before the run. These were awesome!

Post-run:  Turkey tacos. I hung out on the couch for a while and watched The Kentucky Derby. I love the names of the horses!

Only a few weeks until the marathon. Let the tapering begin.

  1. Congratulations on the 20 miler! Those pancakes look amazing and like perfect fuel. I’ll have to bookmark the recipe for when I start marathon training again. :)

  2. I love how you change your header, so creative. Oh and you are such a rockstar! 20 miles is HUGE
